Branquinha (Alagoas state)
Despite significant hurdles from recent flooding and the pandemic, the rural municipality of Branquinha (pop. ~9,600) engineered a united local effort that transformed early literacy. Between 2023 and 2025, its Literate Child Indicator rating soared from 76.4% to 90.59%, surpassing state benchmarks and ranking among the region’s best. The breakthrough was driven by a multi-pronged approach that included investing in teachers, mobilizing the community, and establishing dedicated learning recovery spaces alongside a new Literacy Center.
