Lemann Fellows and leaders from the Lemann Foundation and Fundo Baobá gather at Aquilombamento Alcance 2025.

The Alcance Initiative represents a key Lemann Foundation strategy dedicated to accelerating access for Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous professionals to graduate programs at top-tier global universities. Since 2020, the initiative has backed 70 Lemann fellows, driving meaningful diversity across individuals pursuing international education opportunities.

Over its six-year history, the initiative has operated around three strategic fronts: opportunity awareness, rigorous academic preparation, and targeted race-conscious fellowship funding. In 2025, the program entered a new phase as Fundo Baobá joined as a strategic co-investor, scaling financial capacity and enhancing institutional governance for call-for-application cycles. That same year, the Alcance Prep Program admitted nearly 30 candidates, while 16 full fellowships were awarded across critical growth areas including STEM, public management, education, and business, underpinned by an immersive cohortbuilding convening.

“True to the spirit of this fellowship, my goal is to apply my doctoral research to transform the lives of people who, like me, come from underrepresented backgrounds and faced limited opportunities, contributing to social justice and driving meaningful change across education and society.”

Otavio Barros,

Lemann Fellow (Alcance track), Ph.D. candidate in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison
